Eye makeup be it kajal, mascara, or eyeliner can effortlessly elevate your appearance. But when worn daily, these cosmetics might quietly compromise your eye health.

A leading ophthalmologist has warned that everyday eye makeup habits are significantly compromising ocular health. Using eyeliner on the waterline, sleeping in makeup, and keeping expired cosmetics are major contributors to seven common eye issues—ranging from styes and conjunctivitis to dry eye and allergic reactions.

Experts point out that tightlining applying eyeliner directly to the inner eyelid where the meibomian glands open can block these glands, causing chronic inflammation, evaporative dry eye, and even gland atrophy over time. Mascara that flakes or residue from waterproof formulas can similarly obstruct tear quality and introduce bacteria directly into the eye’s surface.

Sleeping in eye makeup further supports persistent gland obstruction and inflammation, leading to recurring styles and chronic eyelid irritation. Poor hygiene, such as reusing brushes or sharing products, increases the risk of conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and in severe cases, corneal abrasions or infections.

Contact lens wearers face heightened danger: makeup particles can lodge beneath lenses, causing corneal scratches or infectious keratitis, which may result in permanent vision loss. Safe practice demands inserting lenses before makeup application and removing both at day’s end with gentle methods.

Additional risks include allergic reactions like swelling or itchiness linked to preservatives and pigments in lash adhesives and glitter. Broken or brittle lashes may arise from excessive lash curling and mascara buildup.

Preventive recommendations include:

1. Replacing eye makeup every three to six months;
2. Choosing ophthalmologist-approved, contact lens‑safe formulas;
3. Avoiding eyeliner on the inner waterline;
4. Never sleeping in eye makeup;
5. Cleaning applicators weekly and avoiding sharing products.

Visible signs of trouble—such as persistent redness, discomfort, tearing, lid crusting, blurred vision, or lash residue—should prompt immediate consultation with an ophthalmologist. Ignoring early irritation can escalate into corneal ulcers, chronic inflammation, or irreversible vision damage.
