Gunmen Open Fire in Santo Domingo

The incident took place on Sunday when several armed men dressed in black stormed a billiard hall in Santo Domingo, the provincial capital. They opened fire on those present, killing seven individuals.

Local authorities swiftly secured the area. Preliminary investigations revealed that among the victims were a retired police officer and a known gang leader, nicknamed “Rasta,” as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

    Region Plagued by Gang Violence

Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, located between the Andes Mountains and Ecuador’s Pacific coast, lies at a crossroads of several drug trafficking routes. This geographical position has made it a hotspot for violent gang-related activity in recent years.

Similar Attack in Guayaquil Leaves Eight Dead

In June, a similar tragedy unfolded in Ecuador’s southwestern city of Guayaquil, where at least eight people were shot dead in the Pascuales district along the Daule highway. According to national police, the shooting occurred near the Peca area, outside a municipal market during early morning hours as vendors were starting their workday.

Among the dead were five motorcycle taxi drivers, local television reports confirmed. Authorities linked the spike in violence to the recent seizure of four assault rifles.

    Ongoing Violence in Guayaquil

Guayaquil, often cited as one of Ecuador’s most dangerous cities, has faced a series of violent incidents in recent months. In one case, four individuals were murdered inside a home in the Bastión Popular neighborhood. In another, a married couple was shot shortly after dropping their children off at school in Mucho Lote.

The city, the capital of Guayas province, has been under a state of emergency since April, with the government citing severe internal unrest and a growing threat from organized crime.
