Brussels: Several people are feared dead and at least six workers remain missing after a major fire broke out at a construction site in central Brussels on Tuesday, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
The fire erupted early in the morning at a major renovation project at Place de Brouckere, where around 200 workers were reportedly present when the incident occurred. Emergency teams rushed to the site and launched search and rescue operations.
Bodies Found as Search Continues
During the rescue operation, authorities discovered multiple bodies inside one of the building’s elevator shafts. Officials have not yet confirmed the exact death toll, while efforts are continuing to locate six workers who are still unaccounted for.
Labour inspection officials said rescuers gained limited access to one of the elevator cabins, where several victims were found.
Second Blaze Complicates Rescue Efforts
Firefighters managed to bring the initial blaze on the lower floors under control, but flames later spread through the elevator shafts, triggering another fire in the building’s underground section. The renewed blaze made rescue operations more challenging.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire. Investigators are examining the site as emergency crews continue searching for the missing workers. Officials said further details will be released after the rescue operation is completed.
