Over 20 Injured in Clash During Kartik Purnima Procession in Jharkhand’s Giridih

Giridih: More than 20 people were injured after a violent clash broke out between two groups during a Kartik Purnima procession in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Wednesday, officials said.

The incident took place in the Taratand police station area, where a religious procession linked to Tulsi Vivah was being carried out.

Altercation Escalates Into Group Clash

According to local residents, a minor dispute on Tuesday evening during the Tulsi Vivah rituals snowballed into a major confrontation the next morning.

Trouble began when the procession reached near the Kali temple, where members of another group allegedly tried to obstruct its passage.

An argument ensued, which intensified after some individuals began recording videos of the procession, leading to objections and provocation. Soon, both sides resorted to stone-pelting and attacks with sticks, triggering panic in the area.

Over 20 Injured; Police Reinforcements Called In

More than 20 people sustained injuries, several of them seriously. The injured were rushed to nearby health centres, while the critically hurt were referred to Giridih Sadar Hospital for further treatment.

Police personnel from Taratand initially tried to bring the situation under control, but as tensions grew, reinforcements were called from Gandey, Ahilyapur, and nearby police stations.

Senior officials — Deputy Commissioner Ramniwas Yadav, Superintendent of Police Dr Bimal Kumar, and SDPO Jitwahan Oraon — reached the spot to supervise operations and restore order.

Heavy Police Deployment, Situation Under Control

A large police contingent has since been deployed in the area to prevent further violence, and patrolling has been intensified.

SP Dr Bimal Kumar said that initial investigations suggest the clash originated from a personal dispute between two individuals, which later escalated into a group confrontation.

“Strict action will be taken against all those involved in disturbing law and order,” the SP said.

Officials confirmed that while the situation remains tense, it is currently under control, with continuous monitoring to maintain peace in the region.
