Flash floods: Flash floods following Monday’s torrential rains in eastern Afghanistan have killed at least 20 people, leaving over 100 missing. The Taliban government said relief and rescue operations are ongoing, and the death toll is expected to rise.

Massive damage in Nuristan

Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, was the hardest hit by the floods. Homes, shops, and government buildings were severely damaged. The city’s mayor is also reported missing. More than 80 people were injured. Locals are searching for those trapped in the rubble with limited resources.

Alert issued in 10 provinces

The Taliban’s meteorological department has issued a warning of heavy rain and flooding in 10 provinces until Wednesday. Authorities have urged people to stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas.

Climate change and deforestation are major causes

Experts say that climate change, ongoing deforestation, and illegal logging have increased the risk of flooding. This has reduced the soil’s ability to absorb water, making flash floods more severe during heavy rains. Previous floods in northern Afghanistan in April also claimed hundreds of lives.
