Amritsar: The demand to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor connecting India with Pakistan has once again gained momentum. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to restore the corridor at the earliest.

In his letter, Dhami said Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib is the sacred place where the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, spent the final years of his life and preached the message of Naam Japna (remembering God), Kirat Karni (earning an honest living), and Vand Chhakna (sharing with others).

He said the historic shrine holds immense religious significance for Sikhs across the world, and devotees have a deep desire to visit the gurdwara for darshan.

Corridor Opened During Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Prakash Purab

Dhami recalled that the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor was inaugurated in November 2019 on the occasion of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Prakash Purab, fulfilling a long-standing wish of millions of Sikh devotees.

He said that after the corridor was opened, a large number of pilgrims from India were able to visit the historic shrine in Pakistan.

However, due to the recent security situation between India and Pakistan, the corridor has remained closed, causing disappointment and emotional distress among Sikh devotees worldwide.

Appeals for Immediate Restoration

In his letter, the SGPC chief noted that the committee has already passed several resolutions urging the Central government to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor. Memorandums have also been submitted to the Governor of Punjab and the Union Home Minister seeking its restoration.

Dhami appealed to Prime Minister Modi to treat the matter as a priority, considering the religious sentiments of millions of Sikh devotees.

He also urged the Centre to direct the concerned ministries to take the necessary diplomatic and administrative steps for the early restoration of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

Expressing hope for a positive response, Dhami said the Sikh community believes the Central government will consider this emotional and religious appeal with sensitivity and take steps to facilitate the reopening of the corridor at the earliest.
