Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has received relief from the Supreme Court after it dismissed a petition challenging the renovation and expansion of his sea-facing residence, Mannat, in Mumbai’s Bandra area.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran refused to interfere with the Bombay High Court’s earlier decision, allowing the renovation work to continue.

Why Was the Plea Filed?

The petition was filed by social activist Santosh Daundkar, who challenged the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance granted for the renovation of Mannat. The petitioner alleged that permissions had been granted in violation of CRZ regulations governing construction near the coastline.

The plea also claimed that Shah Rukh Khan had allegedly converted a number of flats meant for mass housing into a single-family residence without obtaining the required environmental and planning approvals. The petitioner sought cancellation of the permissions granted by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) and other authorities.

The Bombay High Court had earlier dismissed the petition after observing that it was filed after an unexplained delay, as the approvals being challenged had been granted several years ago.

Supreme Court Dismisses Challenge

During the hearing, the Supreme Court declined to entertain the appeal against the Bombay High Court’s order and dismissed the petition, effectively clearing the legal hurdle surrounding the renovation project.

With the apex court refusing to interfere, the approvals granted for the renovation remain valid, allowing work on the project to continue.

Mannat Renovation Project

Mannat, Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic residence overlooking the Arabian Sea in Bandra, is one of Mumbai’s most visited celebrity homes.

The renovation project reportedly includes structural upgrades and the addition of extra space after obtaining the necessary permissions from the concerned authorities. The work had attracted legal scrutiny because the property falls within a Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), where construction activities are governed by strict environmental norms.

The Supreme Court’s decision brings the legal challenge to an end, paving the way for the renovation work to proceed.
