Shimla: Preparations underway to collect garbage fee from tourist vehicles in the capital

In Shimla, the Queen of Hills, both local and foreign tourist vehicles will now be required to hand over their waste to the Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Corporation will collect this waste from tourist vehicles at the city entrance and deliver it to the Bharyal waste plant. In return, drivers will be charged a garbage fee.

The Municipal Corporation is preparing this special proposal to clean up Shimla, the Queen of Hills. This new system is set to be implemented this year. The Municipal Corporation has already begun preparations for this. Records are being taken of buses, travellers, taxis, and other vehicles carrying tourists to Shimla.

Millions of tourist vehicles arrive in the city every year, with the highest numbers during the summer and winter seasons. A final decision on the garbage collection fee is still pending. This fee will be minimal and will only be implemented after the House approves it.

Taxi drivers will be asked to carry dustbins in their vehicles and empty them at the corporation’s garbage collection center. Municipal Commissioner Bhupendra Atri stated that the proposal is being prepared.

Details are being collected regarding the number of tourist vehicles. Recently, the government mandated the installation of dustbins on all commercial vehicles. Hundreds of vehicles have been fitted with dustbins, but no arrangements have been made in the city for where their waste will be disposed of.

According to the Municipal Corporation, a garbage collection center will be set up near the Tutikandi parking lot. Currently, waste is also being collected at ISBT Tutikandi.
