Shimla, the ‘Queen of Hills’ getting warmer; temperature has risen by up to 2.5°C in 10 years

The weather in Shimla, the ‘Queen of Hills’, is changing rapidly. Known for its cold climate, the city is increasingly falling prey to rising heat (the ‘heat island’ effect). A study conducted by the Municipal Corporation reveals that Land Surface Temperature (LST) in several parts of the city has risen by 1.7 to 2.5 degrees Celsius over the last decade.

Experts attribute this primarily to rapid concretization, the construction of multi-story buildings, and shrinking green cover.

According to the survey report commissioned by the Municipal Corporation through GIZ, the areas most affected include the Shimla Bypass, Shoghi Bypass, Baluganj, Chakkar, Junga Road, Sanjauli Housing Board Colony, Engine Ghar, Mashobra, and the vicinity of the city’s core area.

These localities have witnessed large-scale residential and commercial construction in recent years, leading to a localized rise in temperatures.

The study also indicates that temperature increases were relatively higher in areas characterized by metal roofing and dense construction. The study covers the period from 2012 to 2023. There is a pressing need to increase the city’s tree cover, preserve open spaces, and promote eco-friendly construction; the Corporation has made budgetary provisions for these measures.

Plans are underway to strictly enforce building regulations and expand green areas in the near future. On World Environment Day (June 5), people must pledge to protect greenery.
