Talbir Singh Gill named AAP candidate from Majitha

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has officially named Talbir Singh Gill as its candidate for the Majitha Assembly constituency in the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The announcement was made by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann during a public event in Majitha, marking one of the earliest candidate declarations ahead of next year’s polls.

Political Context: Breaking into Akali Stronghold

Majitha has traditionally been seen as a bastion of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), long represented by senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia and his family. Majithia has been elected multiple times from this constituency, and in 2022 his wife Ganieve Kaur Majithia won the seat. AAP’s decision to field Gill is seen as a strategic move aimed at challenging SAD’s entrenched influence in the region.

Gill’s Political Journey

Once a close associate of Bikram Singh Majithia, Talbir Singh Gill contested the 2022 Assembly elections from Amritsar South on a SAD ticket but did not win. Over time, his relationship with Majithia soured, leading him to join the Aam Aadmi Party in May 2024. Post joining AAP, Gill was appointed as the party’s Majitha halqa in-charge, signaling his elevated role within the party’s state leadership.

During the function where Gill’s candidature was announced, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann not only laid the foundation for rural road projects worth over ₹11 crore but also used the platform to critique SAD leadership and warn against returning to past politics of intimidation and fear. Mann emphasised that development and people-centric governance will be at the heart of AAP’s campaign in Majitha.
