Shooting at Teotihuacan Pyramids: Canadian woman killed, 13 injured

Mexico City: A gunman opened fire at the historic Teotihuacan Pyramid complex, killing a Canadian woman and injuring at least 13 people.

The suspect committed suicide by shooting himself after the attack, officials said.

Foreign tourists among the injured

According to officials, some of the injured were shot, while others were injured in a stampede. The victims, including tourists from Canada, Colombia, and Russia, were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police and the National Guard arrived at the scene immediately after the incident and began rescue operations.

How the attack unfolded

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the Pyramid of the Moon, where a large number of tourists were present. According to eyewitnesses, the attacker was firing from a height, causing panic among the people.

Many people lay down on the ground, while others ran down the stairs to save their lives.

Investigation underway, suspect identified

Police have identified the attacker as Julio César Jasso Ramírez. The motive behind the attack is under investigation.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the government is closely monitoring the situation and has ordered a full investigation.

Security concerns rise

The incident has raised questions about security in Mexico, especially as the country prepares to host the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Teotihuacan is one of the most important ancient cultural sites in Mesoamerica, attracting a large number of tourists each year.
