Shreyas Iyer Admits India Fell Short in Execution After T20I Series Defeat to England

Bristol: India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted his side fell short in execution after England sealed the T20I series with a commanding nine-wicket victory in Bristol on Thursday.

After another batting collapse, India managed 158/7 in 20 overs, with Iyer leading the fightback through a brilliant 80 off 49 balls. However, the total proved insufficient as England chased down the target of 159 in just 13.5 overs, losing only opener Jos Buttler.

Harry Brook and Phil Salt dominated the Indian attack with an unbeaten 151-run partnership for the second wicket, guiding England to a comprehensive victory with 37 balls to spare.

Iyer: ‘158 wasn’t the perfect total’

Speaking after the match, Iyer admitted India failed to post a competitive score and could not execute their bowling plans consistently.

“It was disappointing. 158 wasn’t the perfect total on the board, and we saw how quickly they chased it. I asked our bowlers to stick to the right lengths because it was difficult to score when the ball was hitting the top of middle and leg stump. We fell a bit short in our execution, and whenever we tried variations, they capitalised on the loose deliveries,” Iyer said.

Captain’s fighting knock goes in vain

Coming in after early wickets, Iyer anchored India’s innings almost single-handedly, smashing four boundaries and five sixes in his 49-ball 80. No other Indian batter managed to make a significant contribution.

Despite his impressive innings, the skipper said individual performances mean little if the team does not win.

“I’m happy with my performance, but if it’s not in a winning cause, it doesn’t matter much. Whenever I play, I want my team to win. Unfortunately, today wasn’t that day. We’ll look to bounce back in the next game,” he said.

India in transition, says Iyer

Backing the young squad, Iyer described the current Indian team as being in a transition phase and said mistakes are part of the learning process.

“This is a transition phase, and we are bound to make mistakes. Many youngsters are playing in overseas conditions for the first time. These experiences will help them understand the importance of adapting quickly. I’m confident they will learn from this and come back stronger,” he added.

England script history

The victory marked England’s first bilateral T20I series win over India in a series consisting of two or more matches.

Before the ongoing series, India had won five of the previous six bilateral T20I series against England, while one had ended in a draw. Overall, India had also won 11 of their previous 12 bilateral T20I series, with the only exception being a 1-1 draw in South Africa in December 2023.
