A new controversy has emerged in Punjab over the ‘Yogshala’ yoga classes being held in gurdwaras. On this issue, Faridkot’s Sikh youth leader Gursevak Singh Bhana, along with his associates, went to Sri Akal Takht Sahib today and submitted a memorandum at the secretariat. They raised objections to the yoga classes being held in the gurudwaras and demanded that they be stopped immediately.
According to received information, under the ‘Yogshala’ project run by the Punjab government, yoga classes are being conducted at several gurdwara premises and langar halls. Objecting to this, Gursevak Singh Bhana said that this activity is not in line with Sikh dignity and the sanctity of gurdwaras.
Demand to hold yoga in places other than religious sites
They also said that yoga is a separate physical and mental practice that should be conducted in parks, community centers, or other public places instead of gurdwaras. They claim that it is everyone’s responsibility to maintain the sanctity of religious sites, and such activities are causing discomfort in that context.
Petition at the secretariat and appeal for intervention from Akal Takht
During this time, they first bowed at Shri Harmandir Sahib and then reached the Akal Takht Sahib secretariat. They demanded that the Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib issue clear orders or a directive on this matter so that yoga classes being conducted in gurdwaras can be stopped. This whole issue has sparked discussions within the Sikh community, and now all eyes are on the potential decision of the Akal Takht Sahib.
