Washington: Groups linked to US-based tech tycoon Neville Roy Singham are facing renewed scrutiny in the United States over their funding and activities, with their coverage of protests in India and Europe drawing attention. However, the available reporting does not establish that these groups funded or directed the protests over electoral rolls in India.
A report published by Fox News Digital on Tuesday said it had identified 101 organisations across nine countries, including the United States, that were involved in coordinating, organising or amplifying protests in Europe. Some of the organisations named in the report have also commented on demonstrations in India.
The protests in India have centred on revisions to electoral rolls, with demonstrators raising concerns about voter exclusion and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Groups Comment on Protests in India
The report named Progressive International, which discussed protests in France, Spain, India and Albania in a briefing published on October 16. It raised the question of how what it called the “new rebellions” could gain organised political power.
Another organisation mentioned was Indian Alliance Paris, a France-based group described in the report as connecting French and Indian protest messaging. The report said it had partnered with the People’s Forum in Manhattan, but did not claim that this network was directing protests in India.
Progressive International also posted about demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 12. In its post on X, it alleged that the Indian government had deployed armed forces against people protesting what it described as mass disenfranchisement.
Vijay Prashad, who heads Tricontinental, referred to Paris, New Delhi and Buenos Aires in an October 18 post, writing: “Let fury have the hour, anger can be power.”
BreakThrough News also covered the Indian protests on October 12, 13 and 16. In one report, it described the police response as “unparalleled and unprecedented” repression.
Fox News Digital said BreakThrough News, CodePink and the Party for Socialism and Liberation were funded and supported by Singham, an American-born technology entrepreneur who lives in Shanghai.
US Congressional Scrutiny of Singham-Linked Organisations
The scrutiny of organisations associated with Singham has also reached the US Congress. In July 2026, the House Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Jason Smith, subpoenaed BreakThrough News, Tricontinental and the People’s Forum.
Smith led a US House delegation that met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai this week.
Earlier, in April 2025, Senator Chuck Grassley asked the US Justice Department whether the People’s Forum and CodePink should register as foreign agents. In his letter, Grassley alleged that the organisations had received funding and influence from Singham and the Chinese government.
Separately, The New York Post and CBS News reported, citing unnamed sources, that a federal grand jury in Manhattan was investigating Singham. No charges have been filed, and the Justice Department has not confirmed the investigation. The New York Times had previously reported on Singham’s funding network in 2023.
The links described in the reporting include organisations’ coverage of protests, public statements and expressions of solidarity. These connections do not, by themselves, establish that the organisations financed or organised the demonstrations in India.
Political Row Over Electoral Roll Revision
The demonstrations in India have taken place amid controversy over the revision of electoral rolls. The Guardian reported that the exercise had removed 130 million names from India’s electoral roll, while protesters called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
A BJP spokesperson rejected allegations surrounding the revision, saying they had “no base, not an iota of evidence.”
Meanwhile, American singer Mary Millben posted videos on X discussing the protests and questions about their funding. In a separate video, she alleged that a group associated with George Soros was behind the demonstrations. That allegation was presented in her post and was not established by the reporting on Singham-linked organisations.
The issue has brought renewed attention to the funding and international connections of groups commenting on India’s protests. However, the available information does not establish a direct funding or organisational link between Singham-associated groups and the demonstrations over electoral rolls.
