SIR begins in Punjab today: 20 million voters to be verified; final voter list to be released on October 1

A Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process is set to begin in Punjab today. Under this initiative, the details of 21,457,160 voters will be verified. The final electoral roll is scheduled for release on October 1. During this period, the names of fake, duplicate, and deceased voters will be removed from the list.

The process kicks off with activities related to training Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and the revision procedure, and continues until June 24. From June 25 to July 24, BLOs will conduct door-to-door visits to assist voters in completing the required forms. Each BLO has been assigned the responsibility of covering approximately 300 households and 1,200 voters.

Additionally, the draft electoral roll will be published on August 3. Subsequently, claims and objections can be filed between August 3 and September 2. The Commission has clarified that during the SIR, the Aadhaar card will be treated solely as a source of identification; it will not be accepted as conclusive proof of identity.

After distributing the forms, BLOs will contact voters three times to collect them. During the verification process, voters’ dates of birth and family records will be cross-checked. Documents will also be examined for individuals whose names did not appear in the 2003 electoral roll but whose parents’ or grandparents’ names were listed.

Voters will be able to check old records on the Commission’s website. According to the Commission, Form-7 must be filled out to have a name removed from the electoral roll. Meanwhile, NRIs who have not acquired citizenship of another country can register their names in the electoral roll by filling out Form-6A.
