SIR for electoral rolls begins in Haryana from today; final roll in September

The Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign for the electoral roll begins in Haryana today. Over the next 30 days, 20,629 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct a door-to-door verification of 2,06,55,929 voters.

However, the Election Commission faces five major challenges in this massive campaign: the failure of political parties to appoint adequate Booth Level Agents (BLAs), completing mapping work in metro cities, accessing high-rise residential buildings and remote hamlets (dhanis), ensuring every voter fills out the enumeration form, and removing incorrect or duplicate names from the electoral roll.

Chief Electoral Officer A. Sreenivas stated that the door-to-door verification drive will continue in the state until July 14. BLOs will provide enumeration forms to every voter; filling, signing, and returning these forms is mandatory. Failure to do so could result in the voter’s name being removed from the final electoral roll.

He noted that an intensive revision of this scale is being conducted in the state for the first time since 2002. So far, an average of 64.7 percent of the mapping work between the 2024 electoral roll and the 2002 list has been completed. The draft electoral roll will be published on July 21, while claims and objections can be filed until August 20. The final electoral roll will be published on September 22.

Large-scale deployment of government personnel
To oversee the campaign, 2,245 supervisors, 162 Additional Electoral Registration Officers, 489 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, and 89 Electoral Registration Officers have been deployed. For complaints or information, one can contact the helpline number 1950. Complaints will be resolved within 24 to 48 hours. Political parties have appointed 31,764 BLAs.

The BJP has appointed 17,125, the Congress 13,736, the Aam Aadmi Party 6, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) 307, and the Indian National Lok Dal 289 BLAs. The Jannayak Janta Party has appointed 86 BLAs, while other parties have appointed only 215.
