SIR in Punjab from today: 24,453 BLOs to conduct door-to-door visits; final list to be released on October 1

The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Punjab has geared up for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Starting today, an army of 24,453 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will go door-to-door to collect the necessary forms. The SIR has become a major topic of discussion across the state, engaging everyone from political parties to the general public.
Various misconceptions are also circulating regarding this exercise, and there are apprehensions among the diaspora living abroad.

While some voters fear their names might be deleted from the electoral rolls, the ‘pre-mapping’ phase of the process has already been completed. Notably, although 86.02 percent of pre-mapping has been finished, approximately 30 lakh voters remain outside the scope of this process so far.

Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer, Anindita Mitra, shared the campaign’s roadmap during a meeting with representatives of political parties at Punjab Bhawan on Wednesday. She stated that, in accordance with the Election Commission of India’s directives, the process would be conducted in a completely transparent and systematic manner.

Election Staff to Reach 2.14 Crore Voters

According to the Chief Electoral Officer, the state’s 24,453 BLOs will visit households over the next month to distribute, verify, and collect enumeration forms. During this period, data for Punjab’s 2,14,61,043 voters will be updated. Additionally, the rationalization of polling stations will be completed by July 24.

Draft Electoral Roll to be Released on August 3

Following the completion of the campaign, the draft electoral roll will be published on August 3. Subsequently, voters will be able to submit claims and objections regarding the addition, deletion, or modification of names until September 2. These will be resolved by September 28, and the final electoral roll will be released on October 1.

Mapping of Over 86 Percent of Voters Completed

It was reported during the meeting that the mapping of 86.02 percent of voters in Punjab has been completed so far. A list of voters whose mapping could not be completed has been provided to all political parties. The Election Commission has appealed to political parties to cooperate in making the campaign a success.

Representatives of All Major Political Parties Present

Representatives from various political parties, along with Additional Chief Electoral Officer Amandeep Garg and Joint Chief Electoral Officer Navneet Kaur Ball, attended the meeting. Fairy Soft (Aam Aadmi Party), Hardeep Singh Kingra and Happy Khera (Congress), Parampal Kaur (BJP), Advocate Arshdeep Singh Clair and Nachhatar Singh Gill (Shiromani Akali Dal), and Jaswant Rai and Harbhajan Singh (BSP) were present.

Through this campaign, the Election Commission aims to make the state’s electoral roll more accurate and up-to-date, ensuring that eligible voters can exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections.
