In a major development in the death of an 18‑year‑old NEET aspirant from Jehanabad, Bihar, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has collected DNA samples from six suspects as part of the ongoing probe into the mysterious incident that has sparked nationwide attention. The samples were obtained in Patna under judicial supervision and sent for forensic testing.
The teenager, who was staying at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna while preparing for the NEET medical entrance exam, was found unconscious in her hostel room on January 6 and died at a private hospital on January 11 after several days in a coma. Her family alleged sexual assault and foul play, while initial police reports had treated the case as a suspected suicide.
Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) tests earlier indicated traces of semen on the victim’s undergarments, prompting investigators to treat the case as a possible sexual assault followed by death. Police have now moved to develop DNA profiles from this biological evidence, which will be matched with those of the suspects.
The six individuals whose DNA samples were collected by the SIT were identified based on their presence near the hostel premises, CCTV footage, call data records, and other investigative leads. Some were seen around the hostel before and after the incident, while others had access to the premises without proper registration.
In addition to the suspects, DNA samples were also taken from the victim’s family members to establish a reference genetic profile, enhancing the accuracy of forensic comparisons.
Police officials said the next step will be to analyze and compare the DNA profiles from the suspects against the genetic material found in the forensic report. The results could play a decisive role in identifying those responsible and advancing legal action.
Meanwhile, law enforcement continues to review CCTV footage, digital evidence, and witness statements as part of the comprehensive investigation.
The case has evoked strong public sentiment and calls for justice, with demands for a fair and transparent investigation. Authorities have assured that all scientific evidence and investigative avenues will be pursued diligently to ensure accountability.
