Action by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has intensified in the high-profile Behbal Kalan firing case in Punjab. On Wednesday morning, the SIT team visited the residence of former Union Minister Vijay Sampla and issued a fresh summons for him to appear on June 28. Sampla stated that this move is an attempt to intimidate and pressure him.
Reacting to the new summons received today, Sampla said he is ready to fully cooperate with the SIT’s investigation. However, he demanded that the relevant documents concerning the case for which he is being repeatedly summoned be made available beforehand, enabling him to appear well-prepared. This would ensure that no one’s time is wasted during the investigation process.
Allegation of Politically Motivated Action
Sampla stated that since the SIT has not yet provided the relevant documents, he does not wish to comment on the matter. He alleged that this action against him is driven by a political vendetta.
Intent to Pressure: Sampla
Levelling serious allegations, the former state president claimed he is being summoned solely with the intent to pressure or intimidate him. He stated unequivocally that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has no direct connection to this entire matter.
Appeared before the SIT Yesterday
Earlier, on Tuesday, Sampla had appeared before the SIT at the PAP Complex in Jalandhar. He had mentioned that he was summoned for questioning regarding a memorandum submitted to the Governor in 2018.
Investigation Centered on 2015 Cases
This entire exercise is being conducted in connection with two separate cases registered at the Bajakhana police station in 2015. These cases were filed on October 14, 2015, and October 21, 2015. Incidents of sacrilege and the subsequent firing at Behbal Kalan had a profound impact on Punjab’s politics and social fabric. The SIT is now attempting to get to the bottom of the matter by questioning these key individuals face-to-face.
