Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman honoured Tamil Nadu’s rich weaving legacy by wearing a handwoven Kanchipuram (Kanjeevaram) silk saree on Budget Day 2026 as she arrived to present the Union Budget 2026–27 in Parliament. The traditional attire reflects pride in India’s indigenous textile heritage and showcases the craftsmanship of the country’s handloom artisans.

Her choice this year was a deep maroon or purple handwoven Kancheevaram saree with light golden-brown checks (kattam) and a coffee brown border, paired with a contrasting blouse an elegant tribute to the centuries-old weaving traditions of Tamil Nadu.

Kanchipuram sarees, originating from the historic weaving town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, are considered among India’s finest silk weaves, known for their rich texture, intricate patterns, and vibrant hues.
