Social security schemes benefit 35.90 lakh people; over ₹2,150 crore released in three months

The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is continuously working to ensure the timely delivery of financial assistance to eligible individuals under social security schemes. According to the state government, ₹2,150.73 crore has been released for various social security schemes up to June 2026 (the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year). Currently, approximately 35.90 lakh people in the state are benefiting from these schemes.

Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that the objective of the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is to provide timely financial assistance to the elderly, widows, dependent children, and other economically weaker sections of society. The government is ensuring that no eligible person is deprived of the benefits of government schemes and that all those in need can lead their lives with dignity.

Budget of ₹6,131.91 crore for the entire year

The Minister also informed that the Punjab Government has allocated a budget of ₹6,131.91 crore for the implementation of social security schemes during the 2026-27 financial year. This budget will be utilized to continue existing pension and assistance schemes as well as to enroll new eligible beneficiaries.

Highest expenditure on Old Age Pension

According to data from the Punjab Government, ₹1,423.33 crore has been released under the Old Age Pension scheme up to June 2026. Approximately 23.77 lakh senior citizens in the state have benefited from this scheme. The government states that receiving regular pensions provides financial support to the elderly in meeting their daily needs.

Assistance for widows, children, and poor families

A sum of ₹727.40 crore was released up to June 2026 under social security schemes designed for widows, dependent children, and other economically disadvantaged individuals. Approximately 12.13 lakh beneficiaries have received assistance through these schemes. The Punjab government states that the objective of these schemes is to provide financial support to economically weaker families and alleviate their hardships.

Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that the aim of social security schemes is not merely to provide financial aid; through these initiatives, efforts are also being made to foster a sense of security and dignity among the poor, enabling them to lead their lives with self-confidence.

Instructions for the speedy disposal of new applications

The Minister has directed departmental officials to ensure that the verification process for new applications is swift, transparent, and effective. Eligible individuals should receive the benefits of the schemes without unnecessary delay. Furthermore, the department has been instructed to expedite the eligibility verification of those who have not yet been enrolled in any scheme and to add them to the list of beneficiaries. The Punjab government maintains that the schemes are being regularly reviewed to ensure that assistance amounts are timely credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
