Greater Noida: A 27-year-old software engineer lost his life after his car hit a drainage boundary and plunged into a deep ditch near Sector 150 in Greater Noida on Friday night, triggering outrage among local residents over alleged poor road safety measures. The victim was identified as Yuvraj Mehta, who was returning home from work at the time of the accident.
Officials said dense fog and the absence of reflectors on the service road caused the vehicle to collide with a high-ground ridge separating two drainage basins before falling into a nearly 70-foot-deep water-filled ditch.
Distress Call to Father Before Tragic Death
Eyewitnesses said Mehta screamed for help as his car began to submerge in the water. In a distress call to his father, Rajkumar Mehta, he reportedly said, “Dad, I’ve fallen into a deep pit filled with water. I’m drowning. Please come and save me. I don’t want to die.”
Rescue operations were launched immediately, with local police, divers and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams rushing to the spot. Rajkumar Mehta was also present during the rescue efforts. After nearly five hours, the car and Mehta were pulled out of the ditch, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Residents Protest Over Lack of Road Safety Measures
Following the incident, Mehta’s family filed a complaint alleging negligence by authorities, claiming that drains along the service road were neither covered nor fitted with reflectors despite poor visibility conditions. His father said the absence of basic safety measures amid dense fog led to his son’s death.
The incident sparked protests by local residents, who alleged that repeated requests for reflectors and proper signage along the service road had been ignored. Protesters raised slogans against local authorities, demanding immediate steps to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Knowledge Park Police Station in-charge Sarvesh Kumar said that the matter is under investigation and assured that legal action will be taken if any negligence is found.
