Sonam Wangchuk Loses 2 Kg During Hunger Strike, Vows to Continue Protest Over NEET-UG Paper Leak Issue

New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has shared an update on his health three days after beginning an indefinite hunger strike in support of the ongoing protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). According to Wangchuk, he has lost around two kilograms in weight, while medical examinations have indicated a drop in both his blood sugar and blood pressure levels.

Despite the health concerns, Wangchuk said he remains committed to continuing the fast. While acknowledging that he feels tired, he maintained that he is otherwise doing fine.

Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy and the deaths allegedly linked to the issue.

Health Concerns Grow as Fast Continues

In a video message posted on X, Wangchuk revealed that he had lost approximately two kilograms since starting the hunger strike.

“My blood pressure has dropped a little. I will have to increase water and salt intake because dehydration is happening in this summer heat. As I had mentioned earlier, sugar levels naturally fall when a person stops eating,” he said.

He explained that the body initially uses stored fat for energy and, if the fast continues for a longer period, may begin consuming muscle mass.

“This is a long cycle, but according to me, these changes are normal. At the moment, I am feeling better and fine,” Wangchuk added.

‘A Small Sacrifice for Millions of Students’

Wangchuk said that while he was facing some physical discomfort, he considered it insignificant compared to the suffering experienced by students and their families.

“Yes, there are some problems. But if millions of children benefit from this, then it is a small price to pay. My difficulties are minor when compared to the loss of young lives,” he said.

He expressed hope that the government would take appropriate action and address the concerns raised by students and protesters.

Concluding his message, Wangchuk admitted that he was feeling tired but remained determined to continue the agitation.

CJP Urges Public to Join Protest at Jantar Mantar

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke also shared a video on social media, urging students and citizens to gather at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and support Wangchuk’s protest.

“A person is risking his life to seek justice for students. The least we can do is stand with him and show solidarity,” Dipke said.

He reiterated the group’s demands for justice for students who allegedly died by suicide and for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Wangchuk Determined to Continue Despite Health Risks

Dipke said he had expressed concern about Wangchuk’s health, but the activist remained firm in his decision to continue the hunger strike.

“His condition is getting worse every hour, but he is determined to stay here. When I told him I was worried about his health, he said not to focus on that and instead continue the fight for justice,” Dipke stated.

According to Dipke, Wangchuk has faith in the people of the country and believes public support will help sustain the movement.

“He told me that we are not going to stop until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. He believes in the people of this country, and that is why he remains committed to this struggle,” Dipke added.
