New Delhi: Educationist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has completed 18 days of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He joined the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)’s protest on June 28 in support of its demand for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) 2026 and other examinations.
According to updates shared by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, Wangchuk has lost over 8 kg during the fast. The party claims he is experiencing muscle loss, weakness and falling blood pressure but has refused to end his protest.
To step up its agitation, the CJP has announced a mass hunger strike on July 16. The party’s protest at Jantar Mantar has entered its 25th day, with supporters continuing to demand a fair investigation into the alleged exam irregularities.
The CJP is also seeking βΉ1 crore compensation for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide in connection with the examination controversy.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed before the Delhi High Court, requesting that Wangchuk be shifted to a hospital for medical care. The plea also seeks directions to ensure he receives necessary treatment, including force-feeding if required.
In a recent video message, Wangchuk urged people not to treat him as a hero or compare him to Mahatma Gandhi. Calling himself an ordinary citizen, he appealed to people to take responsibility for bringing change rather than depending on any one individual.
The CJP has also announced a ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20, the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, as it continues to press its demands.
