Kolkata: Undefeated South Africa will face New Zealand in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 to be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.
South Africa in Great Form
The Proteas are coming into this match after a stellar performance in the Super 8 stage. The Aiden Markram-led team defeated defending champions India by 76 runs in the first match and then defeated two-time champions West Indies by 9 wickets.
In the final Super 8 match, South Africa secured a place in the semi-finals with a close win against Zimbabwe.
New Zealand’s Mixed Performance
New Zealand’s Super 8 campaign was full of ups and downs. The first match against Pakistan was abandoned due to rain. They then recorded a comprehensive 61-run win against Sri Lanka.
However, the Mitchell Santner-led team suffered a narrow defeat against England. Despite securing three points, the team advanced to the semi-finals based on a better net run rate (NRR).
Five World Cup encounters
This will be the sixth time the two teams will face each other in the T20 World Cup. South Africa has had the upper hand in all five matches played so far. New Zealand has yet to defeat South Africa in a World Cup.
The two teams first met in the 2007 World Cup quarter-finals, where hosts South Africa won by 6 wickets.
In 2009, they faced off in a thrilling encounter, which South Africa won by just 1 run.
In the 2010 World Cup, the Proteas won by 13 runs in the match played in Birmingham.
New Zealand also lost the 2014 World Cup by 2 runs.
Africa also won the recent match
The two teams’ most recent encounter was in the group stage of the current World Cup, where Aiden Markram’s team won by 7 wickets in Ahmedabad.
Now, the two teams will face each other once again in the semi-finals, where New Zealand will look to improve their World Cup record, while South Africa will look to maintain their winning streak.
