Seoul: South Korea on Tuesday confirmed another case of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a duck farm in South Jeolla Province, marking the eighth poultry farm infection this season and the first involving ducks.
The case was reported from Yeongam, around 380 km south of Seoul, officials said, Yonhap reported.
Authorities have issued a 24-hour nationwide standstill order for all duck farms, including related facilities and vehicles. Intensive inspections and disinfection drives will be carried out in the region.
Farmers have also been urged to avoid migratory bird zones and strictly follow preventive steps, such as changing shoes before entering barns.
Rising Concern Amid Migratory Season
Last month, officials announced plans to tighten quarantine protocols as avian influenza cases rise with winter migration patterns. So far, six poultry farm infections and 10 cases in wild birds have been confirmed since the start of the cold season.
In November alone, authorities detected four cases at farms and seven in wild birds.
A government survey found 1.33 million migratory birds entered South Korea in November — a 111% surge from the previous month — increasing the risk of virus spread.
