Madrid: Several people have died and many others are feared injured after two high-speed trains collided in the central Spanish province of Toledo. Relief and rescue operations have been launched following the accident.
Spain’s state rail infrastructure authority said train services between Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia were suspended after two trains collided from behind on Wednesday morning.
Esther Padia, a spokeswoman for the Castile-La Mancha regional administration, the site of the accident, told local media that authorities have confirmed several deaths. She said the information received is worrying and the death toll is expected to rise.
Impact of accident could be more severe than January’s train accident
Government sources told the newspaper El Pais that this accident could be even more serious than the January train accident in Adamuz, which claimed 46 lives.
According to Spanish public broadcaster TVE, a high-speed train collided with the rear of another train, causing two carriages to derail. Rail operator Adif reported that the accident occurred on the Madrid-Seville rail line.
Images broadcast by regional TV channel Castilla-La Mancha Television showed the derailed train. At least one carriage was stuck on the elevated rail track, while bent metal, broken panels, and debris were scattered on the slope below.
Instructions to prepare a sports complex for the injured
Manuel Galán, the mayor of Urda, near the city of Toledo, said emergency services had asked him to prepare a sports complex to accommodate the injured.
Spain’s major political parties, prepping for next month’s general elections, canceled their scheduled events for the day following the accident.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his sadness at the news of the accident. He said on the social media platform X that he was in constant contact with the Transport Minister and the President of Castilla-La Mancha. He stated that emergency services were working on the scene to assist those affected and ensure their safety. Sanchez also expressed condolences and support to the victims and their families.
Also, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the opposition People’s Party, said he was deeply concerned by reports of a new train accident. He said the top priority right now was to help the victims and support their families. He also expressed support for the emergency teams working at the scene.
