The world’s biggest football league, the UEFA Champions League, is starting from Tuesday. After more than 6 years of planning, a failed proposal and the failure of launching the Super League, the Champions League will be seen in action with a new format.
In 6 years, the prestigious clubs put pressure on the league’s organizer European Union of Football Associations (UEFA) for changes, which caused upheaval in European football. As a result, the clubs got everything they wanted. For example, more teams, more matches and that too against strong competitors, plenty of money.
Now instead of 32 teams, 36 teams are participating, between whom 189 matches will be played. Till last season, there were 125 matches. Each team will play 8 matches instead of 6. That too against 8 opponents instead of 3. Europe will get a new club champion on May 31 next year at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
UEFA has set a prize pool of $2.8 billion (about Rs 23,500 crore) for 36 clubs, which is 25% more than last season. The winner is expected to get more than $177 million (about Rs 1490 crore).
Each team will get around Rs 172 crore for participating. Rs 19 crore will be given for winning each match in the league phase and Rs 6.5 crore for each draw. The team will get a bonus of Rs 100 crore for advancing to each knockout round. An extra prize fund of about Rs 8 thousand crore is also given based on the historical record of the teams and national and global broadcast deals.
