Jacques Kallis likely to become KKR mentor after Gautam Gambhir: Reports

New Delhi: Former South African star all-rounder Jacques Kallis may become the new mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Bengali newspaper ‘Sangbad Pratidin’ has claimed that 48-year-old Jacques Kallis will replace current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir was the mentor of KKR last season, but he parted ways with the franchise due to becoming the head coach of the Indian team.

Kallis has also been a part of KKR’s coaching staff before. In 2015, he was the head coach and batting consultant of the team. However, he left the franchise after this season. This season, the KKR team could not qualify for the playoffs. The team finished fifth with 15 points in 14 matches.

Before becoming the head coach, Kallis also played 4 seasons as a player for KKR. He was part of the team from 2011 to 2014. During this, he also played an important role in making KKR the champion in 2012 and 2014. Kallis scored 409 runs in 17 matches in the 2012 season and 151 runs in 8 matches in the 2014 season.

Before the next season of IPL, almost the entire support staff of KKR will change, as team mentor Gautam Gambhir, batting coach Abhishek Nair and fielding coach Ryan ten Doeschate have now joined the Indian team. Currently, only head coach Chandrakant Pandit and bowling coach Bharat Arun are part of the team’s support staff.
