For Sukhjit, who had been dreaming of joining the hockey team since the age of 8, it was not possible before 2018. This was the time when Sukhjit was on a wheelchair. Sukhjit and his family were mourning the end of his hockey career at that time. Everyone thought that Sukhjit’s career was over now. People say that miracles happen, something similar happened with Sukhjit.
The time is 2018. Ajit was selected for the Indian hockey team for the first time. He was only 21 years old. After three-four days, such an incident happened that Sukhjit ended up on a wheelchair. The Indian team was in Belgium during the Pro League. Sukhjit fell ill amid the new environment. Sukhjit did not see himself here and continued his practice.
Meanwhile, Sukhjit started having back pain. Sukhjit tried to deal with this as well. Sukhjit sought help from a physio abroad. The physio was from Australia. During this time, the physio pressed a nerve and the problem became very serious. Sukhjit’s right side became paralyzed.
Father inspired him to stand on his feet
The hope of playing was abandoned. But giving up was not an option for father Ajit. Father Ajit Singh started making efforts to make Sukhjit stand again. After 6 months of hard work, Sukhjit stood on his feet.
Now the goal was to reach the Indian team again. He could hold the hockey stick again. The strong basics that Ajit had taught him in the early years came in handy for Sukhjit as he realized that he had not lost his muscle memory.
By the end of 2019, he returned to domestic hockey. Meanwhile, the period of Covid started. But Sukhjit did not lose courage. During this time he tried to regain his muscle strength. Today his hard work has paid off.
