New Delhi: The third season of the Women’s Premier League starts today. The first match will be between defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants. The match will be played at 7:30 pm at the Vadodara International Stadium.
22 matches will be played between 5 teams in this 29-day tournament. The eliminator will be held on March 13 in Mumbai and the final on March 15. This time matches will be held at 4 venues instead of 2. WPL matches will be held for the first time in Lucknow and Vadodara. Mumbai and Bangalore will once again host the tournament.
Bangalore won the second season.
Bangalore, captained by Smriti Mandhana, won the WPL season-2 title. The team defeated Delhi Capitals by 8 wickets in the final. All-rounder Alice Perry was the top scorer of the tournament. She scored 347 runs in 9 matches. Spinner Shreyanka Patil was the top wicket taker with 13 wickets. The team won 4 out of 8 matches and lost 4.
This time matches will be played at 4 venues. In season 3, matches will be played at 4 venues. 6 matches will be played in Vadodara from 14 to 19 February. Then 8 matches will be played in Bengaluru from 21 February to 1 March. The home team here, Royal Challengers Bangalore, won the title of the second season, so this venue got the maximum matches. 4 matches will be played in Lucknow from 3 to 8 March. Then from 10 to 15 March, 2-2 matches of playoff and league stage will be played in Mumbai.
3 contenders for the title
Mumbai Indians:
The champion of the first season, Mumbai is a strong contender for the title this time too. The team has explosive batsmen like captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Sajeevan Sajna, Yastika Bhatia. The bowling department has an experienced player in the form of South Africa’s Shabnam Ismail.
Delhi Capitals:
The team has played the finals of 2 consecutive seasons. The captain of Delhi is Australia’s Meg Lanning. The opening batsman is Shefali Verma, who plays fast. Jemima Rodriguez is in great form in the middle order. Marizanne Kapp and Arundhati Reddy will be seen playing in bowling.
Royal Challengers Bangalore:
The team will be eyeing to win their second consecutive WPL title. The team’s top order is full of big names. Captain Smriti Mandhana is in great form. Recently, she was awarded the Women’s ODI Player of the Year by the ICC. Among the experienced players are England’s Danielle Wyatt and Australia’s top all-rounder Alice Perry.
The tournament will be played in league format.
The third season of Women’s Premier League will also be played in league format. The team that is at the first position in the points table will directly qualify for the final match. The eliminator match will be played between the second and third placed teams. All 5 teams will play 2-2 matches among themselves, i.e. a team will have to play 8 matches.

No change in prize money, winner will get 6 crores
In the last two seasons, the winning team was given 6 crores, while the runner-up team was given 3 crores as prize money. The best batsman and best bowler got 5 lakh rupees each. In the final match, the player of the match was given 2.5 lakh rupees.
