Srinagar Weather: Rain in plains, snowfall in mountains; Helpline numbers issued

Due to a Western Disturbance, weather conditions deteriorated starting Friday afternoon. Rain occurred in several plains areas, including Srinagar, while snowfall was witnessed in the upper hilly regions, including Shopian. The rain, which began in Srinagar in the afternoon, continued until the evening. Meanwhile, the administration has issued advisories and established helplines in anticipation of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and landslides.

On Friday, the maximum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 17.3 degrees Celsius, which is 1.3 degrees below normal. Conversely, the minimum temperature was recorded at 11.2 degrees Celsius, which is 4.5 degrees above normal. At Qazigund—the gateway to Kashmir—the maximum temperature stood at 17.4 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was 9.8 degrees, 4.4 degrees above normal.

In Pahalgam, the maximum temperature was 15.4 degrees Celsius, 0.3 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was 6.2 degrees, 3.9 degrees above normal. In Gulmarg, the maximum temperature was recorded at 5.6 degrees Celsius—2.2 degrees below normal—while the minimum temperature was 4.0 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees above normal.

According to the Meteorological Department, rain accompanied by thunder, hailstorms, and strong winds is likely on April 4. Moderate to heavy rainfall, snowfall (in higher altitudes), and brief spells of very heavy rain may occur at some locations across the Kashmir and Jammu divisions. The skies are expected to remain partially cloudy from April 5 to 7.

On April 8 and 9, some areas may experience a fresh spell of light rain or snowfall. Brief periods of heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides, and rockfalls in vulnerable areas, and may lead to waterlogging in some low-lying regions. A brief spell of light rain or snowfall (in higher altitudes) may occur in some places on April 10 and 11. Generally, the weather is expected to remain dry from April 12 to 15.
