Jharkhand: Justice Tarlok Chauhan, who hails from Rohru in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on 23 July. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath of office and secrecy to him. Tarlok Chauhan has become the 17th Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
On this occasion, judges of the Jharkhand High Court, senior administrative officers, judicial officers and parents of Justice Chauhan were also present. Tarlok Chauhan has also served as Acting Chief Justice twice in Himachal High Court. He was born on 9 January 1964 in Rohru of Shimla district. He received his primary education from Bishop Cotton School, Shimla. During this time, he was also the captain of the school.
Graduating with honours from DAV College Chandigarh, he became a lawyer in the year 1989 after obtaining a law degree from Punjab University Chandigarh. He joined the eminent chambers of Lala Chhabil Das Senior Advocate. He started his practice in the state High Court and mastered all the fields of law.
Court friends were also made
Tarlok Chauhan has been a legal advisor to several boards, corporations, financial institutions, public and private companies, educational institutions, cooperative societies and various departments, besides the State Electricity Board Limited and the State Civil Supply Corporation. He has been a member of various Lok Adalats.
Court Friends were appointed by the High Court to assist in several important cases relating to hydro projects, ropeways, violations of environmental laws, ban on plastic and tobacco products, implementation of solid waste management projects and formulation of road construction policy in Himachal Pradesh.
Became permanent judge of High Court in 2014
He became an additional judge of Himachal High Court on 23 February 2014. He was made a permanent judge of the High Court on 30 November 2014. He was the chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee of the High Court from 5 May 2014. He worked for the welfare and benefit of children of Bal/Balika Ashram, Himachal’s hospitals, mental health and rehabilitation Shimla and old age home of Himachal Pradesh.
Apart from participating in various national and international conferences, he was also part of the Conference on the theme “Judiciary and the Changing World” from 21st February 2020 to 23rd February 2020 at the Supreme Court, New Delhi in which he was one of the members among the Judges of 3 High Courts.
Participated in the International Learning Exchange Programme on “Improvement of Care and Protection Services for Children” in Romania from 13th to 17th May 2019. Has participated in international conferences abroad.
He was also a member of the Executive Council of Law University
Tarlok Chauhan has also been a member of the Governing Council and Executive Council of Himachal Pradesh National Law University Shimla since 12 November 2016. He was the Chairman of the Judicial Academy from 18 November 2018 to 13 March 2020.
As the head of the Computer and E-Court Committee in the High Court, he is credited with taking computerization to new heights in the Himachal High Court as well as subordinate courts. In the meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium on 26 May 2025, Tarlok Chauhan was recommended to be made the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.
