Storm warning for 13 districts of Punjab: Winds to blow at 60 km/h; cloudy skies expected in Chandigarh

An alert for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning strikes has been issued for 13 districts of Punjab. During this period, strong winds (40–60 km/h), thunderstorms, and lightning strikes are likely in parts of Budhlada, Lehra, Moonak, Patran, Batala, Ajnala, Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot.

Winds at speeds of 30–40 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are expected in parts of Sunam, Fazilka, Muktsar, Jalalabad, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Zira, Patti, Sultanpur Lodhi, Tarn Taran, Khadoor Sahib, Baba Bakala, Amritsar-1, Amritsar-2, Mukerian, and Dhar Kalan.

People are advised to stay away from open areas, trees, and electricity poles during inclement weather and to seek shelter in a safe place.

The department states that conditions remain favorable for the advancement of the monsoon. The weather is likely to remain unsettled over the next few days due to a weather trough extending from Punjab to Bihar and the influence of a new Western Disturbance becoming active on June 18. Cloudy skies, thunderstorms, strong winds, and light to moderate rainfall are expected during this period.
Two major impacts of the rain and humidity:

Electricity demand reached 13,036 MW: Amidst the rain and humidity, the demand for electricity in Punjab surged to 13,036 MW. This peak occurred around 5:45 PM on Monday. After 8 PM, the demand dropped to approximately 12,000 MW. During this time, the state sourced about 5,200 MW of power from its own sources and received approximately 7,700 MW from the Central Government. Four injured in wall collapse in Abohar: Abohar experienced rain for about half an hour around 9:15 AM on Monday. During this time, an unpaved wall collapsed onto a shanty in Arya Nagar. A man, his sister, and two children were injured after being trapped under the debris.

Temperatures to rise by up to 4 degrees over 4 days

According to Surender Paul, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, light to moderate rain is likely at some places in Punjab between June 15 and 18. Rain is expected in several areas on June 19, while there is also a possibility of rainfall at some locations on June 20 and 21.

The maximum temperature is likely to rise gradually by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next four days. No significant change in temperature is expected thereafter.
