Taking a strict stance regarding 44 teachers, the Municipal Corporation (Ludhiana East) in Ludhiana has issued orders directing them to report for Booth Level Officer (BLO) duty on April 24, without fail. The order clearly states that in the event of failure to report for duty, salaries may be withheld, and an FIR could even be registered against them. These directives have been issued by the office of the Electoral Registration Officer.
Appointed for BLO Duty Under Special Intensive Revision (SIR)
According to officials, all these teachers had already been appointed for BLO duty under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process; however, despite repeated instructions, several teachers failed to report for duty. Consequently, the administration has begun enforcing strict measures. The order further clarifies that any absence will be deemed a violation of service rules, and no excuses of any kind will be accepted.
Resentment Among Teachers: Cite Already Heavy Workload
This decision has sparked resentment among the teaching community. Teachers argue that they are already engaged in various other duties. A teacher from a government school in Jamalpur Awana stated that they are currently fulfilling responsibilities at the block level.
Furthermore, they have also been appointed as coordinators for the ‘Sikhya Kranti’ (Education Revolution) program scheduled to be held in Sahnewal on April 24. The teacher added, “We have communicated our situation in writing on multiple occasions, yet we continue to be assigned new duties.”
Teacher on Maternity Leave Also Assigned Duty
In another instance, a teacher from the same school—who is currently on maternity leave (due to pregnancy)—has also been deployed for BLO duty. This has further intensified the outrage among the teachers.
Increased Difficulties During Admission Season
Teachers point out that the peak season for school admissions is currently underway. Moreover, many teachers are already occupied with census and election-related tasks, which is adversely affecting the day-to-day functioning of the schools.
