At least five people were killed and 10 others injured in a suicide blast that struck a wedding ceremony on Friday night in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan. The explosion occurred during celebrations at the residence of a peace committee member, officials said.
According to the District Police Officer (DPO) of Dera Ismail Khan, the blast was caused by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives while guests were gathered for the wedding near Qureshi Morr. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene after the incident was reported.
The explosion took place inside the home of Noor Alam Mehsud, the peace committee chief, during the ceremony. Guests were reportedly dancing when the blast happened, sending debris flying and causing the roof of the room to collapse. This made rescue operations more difficult, with first responders having to clear rubble to reach victims trapped underneath.
Rescue teams from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122 rushed seven ambulances, a fire vehicle, and a disaster response vehicle to the scene. The injured were transported to the District Headquarter Hospital for urgent medical treatment. An emergency was declared at the hospital to handle the influx of casualties.
Officials confirmed five deaths at the site, and ten injured individuals are currently under treatment. Among the deceased, some early reports indicated that prominent local figures, including peace committee members, may have been among those killed, though official identification is still pending.
The peace committee plays a significant role in local security coordination and community protection in some districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and past attacks on such members have been reported in recent months.
Police have cordoned off the area and launched a full investigation into the attack. Authorities are working to determine the identity and affiliations of the suicide bomber and whether the attack was part of a broader militant campaign.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the blast, calling it a “deeply regrettable incident” and directed the provincial police to provide a detailed report on the circumstances. The chief minister also assured that that responsible will be brought to justice.
In addition, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed grief over the loss of life and urged that all possible medical assistance be provided to the injured victims.
The blast adds to a series of violent incidents targeting security collaborators and community leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier this month, armed assailants killed multiple peace committee members in the Bannu district, and in late 2025, another attack on a peace committee office also resulted in fatalities.
Such attacks underscore ongoing security challenges in the region, where militant groups continue to conduct violent operations despite counter-terrorism efforts by Pakistani authorities. Analysts say the unrest has remained a volatile issue across KPK and adjoining areas.
