Suicide bombing

At least five Nigerian soldiers were killed in a suicide attack on a military position near the Cameroon border, according to local defence and security sources. The incident occurred in a remote area of Borno state, a region that has endured years of insurgent violence linked to extremist groups.

The attack took place on Sunday at a military post in Firgi, close to the town of Pulka, AFP reported, citing sources who spoke on Monday night. Umar Sa’idu, a member of a government-backed community militia, said he witnessed the aftermath of the explosion near his residence. “I counted five bodies lying in blood at the back of my house,” Sa’idu said, adding that he helped transport the injured soldiers to hospital.

Sa’idu further stated that after several hours, medical staff at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital confirmed that all five soldiers who were brought in under escort had succumbed to their injuries. The blast reportedly caused panic in the surrounding area, with residents fleeing their homes amid fears of further attacks.
The Nigerian military confirmed that an attack had occurred but stopped short of verifying the reported fatalities.
