Sukhbir Badal Appears in Chandigarh Court in Sacrilege Case; Status report sought from Punjab Police

A hearing was held on Monday at the Chandigarh District Court regarding a case involving former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and other accused individuals. The court has directed the public prosecutor to submit a status report on all the cases. The report has been requested to clarify which cases have reached the conclusion of their investigation and which investigations remain pending.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Harinder Sidhu also directed the accused to place their written statements and arguments on record. The next hearing in the matter is now scheduled for July 18, 2026.

All Accused, Including Sukhbir Badal, Out on Bail

During the hearing, the accused, Sukhbir Singh Badal, appeared before the court through his counsel, D.S. Sobti. Meanwhile, former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini appeared via video conferencing. Other accused individuals—Paramraj Singh Umranangal, Sukhminder Singh Mann, Charanjit Singh Sharma, and Amar Singh Chahal were also present in court through their respective lawyers.

According to court records, the proceedings against former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal have already abated following his demise. Advocate Iman Singh Khara appeared in court on behalf of the complainant in the case, Ajit Singh.

Status Report Sought from Punjab Police

During the hearing at the Chandigarh court, arguments were presented by Sukhbir Singh Badal’s counsel on his behalf, and by the public prosecutor representing the State. After hearing both sides, the court directed the Punjab Police to submit a detailed status report at the next hearing, specifying whether or not the investigation into the case has been completed. Furthermore, the police were asked to clarify which specific cases have concluded their investigation and which matters are still pending.
