Faridkot: Trouble appears to be mounting for Shiromani Akali Dal President and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal regarding the Behbal Kalan firing incident in Faridkot. Giani Raghbir Singh, the former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, recorded his statement on Thursday before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, making several significant revelations.

Giani Raghbir Says Sukhbir Admitted Role in Behbal Kalan Case

Giani Raghbir Singh claimed that during his appearance before Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Sukhbir Singh Badal had admitted his responsibility regarding the Behbal firing incident. He stated that this admission was made publicly before Sri Akal Takht Sahib and was also video-recorded; this recording is currently preserved in the Akal Takht’s records.

In his statement, the Jathedar said that the firing on unarmed and innocent people who were protesting peacefully at Behbal Kalan was carried out as part of a conspiracy. He remarked that the incident had deeply hurt the sentiments of the entire Sikh community and that it is crucial for the truth to come to light.

According to sources, the SIT may now examine the statement given by Giani Raghbir Singh, the video recording held at Sri Akal Takht, and other pieces of evidence. If the investigation corroborates these claims, Sukhbir Singh Badal could face escalating legal and political challenges.

Firing took place on October 14, 2015, during protests against sacrilege

It is noteworthy that on October 14, 2015, police opened fire on people protesting against incidents of sacrilege at Behbal Kalan, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others. This matter has long been a subject of discussion in Punjab’s political and religious circles; the SIT has filed chargesheets against police officers, the case is currently being heard in the Chandigarh District Court and the SIT’s investigation remains ongoing.
