Sunder Nursery to Develop 30-Acre Microhabitat Zone to Revive Delhi’s Lost Biodiversity

New Delhi: Sunder Nursery in Delhi is set to expand its ecological landscape with a major 30-acre microhabitat zone aimed at recreating the city’s historic biodiversity. The project is designed to bring back awareness of Delhi’s natural ecosystems that once thrived across the region but have gradually disappeared due to urban expansion.

A Living Representation of Delhi’s Natural Ecosystems

The upcoming microhabitat zone will be developed as a living ecological model showcasing the different natural landscapes that once defined Delhi. These include ridge forests, riverine belts, alluvial plains, and marshy wetlands.

Each habitat will be recreated using native plant species to closely resemble original ecological conditions, allowing flora and fauna to naturally re-establish themselves in a controlled environment.

Focus on Native Biodiversity and Conservation

A key objective of the project is to reintroduce and preserve native plant species that are part of Delhi’s natural heritage. By restoring these ecosystems, the initiative aims to support birds, insects, and small wildlife that depend on such habitats for survival.

The zone will also act as a conservation space, helping researchers and environmentalists study urban biodiversity restoration in real-time conditions.

    Educational and Public Awareness Space

Beyond conservation, the microhabitat zone will serve as an open learning space for students, researchers, and visitors. It is intended to increase public understanding of how Delhi’s environment has evolved and why protecting biodiversity is crucial in rapidly growing cities.

Interpretive signage and guided experiences are expected to help visitors engage with the ecological history of the region.

    Strengthening Sunder Nursery’s Ecological Role

Already known as a UNESCO heritage-linked garden near Humayun’s Tomb, Sunder Nursery has emerged as a major biodiversity and cultural hub in Delhi. With this expansion, it will further strengthen its role as a model urban ecological park.

The project aligns with broader efforts to integrate nature conservation within urban planning and promote sustainable green spaces in the capital.
