New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya last year. The apex court held that she was not entitled to bail and directed her to surrender before the trial court within three weeks.
Sonam Raghuvanshi is among the key accused in the sensational case involving the alleged killing of her husband during the couple’s honeymoon in Meghalaya in 2025. Following the Supreme Court’s order, she will now have to return to judicial custody as the trial in the case proceeds.
Meghalaya Government Challenged Bail Order
The Meghalaya government had challenged the High Court’s decision that upheld the trial court’s order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi.
The High Court had ruled that she was entitled to bail because the mandatory “grounds of arrest” were allegedly not provided to her at the time of her arrest.
State Cites Typographical Error in Arrest Memo
Opposing the bail, the Meghalaya government argued before the Supreme Court that the grounds of arrest had, in fact, been communicated to Sonam. According to the State, the only issue was a typographical error in the arrest memo.
Instead of mentioning Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relates to the offence of murder, the arrest memo mistakenly referred to Section 403(1) — a provision that does not exist.
SC Orders Surrender Within Three Weeks
Accepting the State’s submissions, the Supreme Court set aside the bail order and directed Sonam Raghuvanshi to surrender before the trial court within three weeks.
With the bail cancelled, she will remain in custody while the criminal proceedings in the alleged murder case continue before the trial court.
