13 Killed in Surat Rain Havoc; Floodwaters Continue to Inundate Homes, Markets and Roads

Surat: Even as heavy rainfall subsided on Thursday, Surat continued to battle severe flooding, with stagnant water inundating homes, markets, roads and industrial areas. The rain-related death toll has risen to 13, while thousands of residents remain affected by one of the city’s worst monsoon spells in recent years.

Floodwaters Continue to Disrupt Normal Life

Large parts of the city remained submerged despite clearer skies. Low-lying localities, including Parvat Patiya, Model Town, Saniya Hemad, Godadara Road, Azad Nagar, Mithi Khadi-Limbayat, Simada, Sarthana and Kumbhariya, continued to face waist-deep water as overflowing creeks spilled into nearby residential areas. Several families stayed in relief shelters or with relatives after floodwaters entered their homes.

Commercial activity also remained affected as water entered shopping complexes, textile markets and industrial units. Traders struggled to pump out floodwater from shops and warehouses, fearing significant losses to inventory and equipment. Roads remained waterlogged, with several vehicles stranded and public transport disrupted.

13 Dead in Rain-Related Incidents

Officials said 13 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents, with most deaths caused by drowning. Among the victims were two brothers swept away while returning home, a specially abled nine-year-old boy, a teenager and several others who were caught in floodwaters across different parts of the city. Authorities have urged residents to avoid entering waterlogged areas as rescue and restoration work continues.

Rescue and Relief Operations Continue

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Surat Fire and Emergency Services remained deployed in flood-hit areas to evacuate stranded residents and monitor vulnerable locations. One of the largest rescue operations was carried out at Shivshakti Society in Dindoli, where 255 people, including women and children, were evacuated after the locality was cut off by floodwaters.

Schools and colleges remained closed as a precaution, while authorities continued sanitation and restoration work to prevent disease outbreaks caused by stagnant floodwater. The state administration is assessing the damage as relief efforts continue across the affected areas.
