The BJP’s “giantslayer” Suvendu Adhikari is emerging as the frontrunner for the chief minister’s post in West Bengal after the party’s historic victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections, ending the long rule of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.

As preparations for the formation of the BJP’s first government in Bengal gather pace, sources indicate that the new administration could also have two deputy chief ministers to assist Adhikari.

Bengal May Get Deputy CMs After Two Decades

West Bengal has not had a deputy chief minister for nearly two decades. Late CPM veteran Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was the last leader to hold the post during the government led by Jyoti Basu.

According to sources, one of the deputy chief minister posts is likely to be given to a woman leader. BJP MLA-elect Agnimitra Paul, who won from Asansol Dakshin, is reportedly among the top contenders and could become the state’s first woman deputy chief minister.

The second deputy chief minister is expected to be chosen from North Bengal. Sources suggest that Shankar Ghosh, who secured victory from Siliguri, is being considered for the role.

Amit Shah Holds Key Meetings in Kolkata

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly held separate meetings with Agnimitra Paul and Shankar Ghosh in Kolkata. According to sources, discussions during the meetings revolved around the possible deputy chief minister positions.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the BJP’s newly elected MLAs is scheduled for this evening, where the leader of the legislative party — effectively the next chief minister — will be formally elected.

Sources earlier indicated that BJP’s West Bengal unit chief Samik Bhattacharya is expected to propose Suvendu Adhikari’s name, which is likely to be approved unanimously through a voice vote by party legislators.

Grand Swearing-In Ceremony Planned at Brigade Parade Ground

The oath-taking ceremony for the new BJP government is expected to take place tomorrow at the histoic Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, and senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the event, which the party is projecting as a major political show of strength following its sweeping victory in Bengal.
