Taiwan Diverts Flights as China Ramps Up Military Drills

New Delhi: China’s latest military exercises around Taiwan have further escalated regional tensions. The impact has now reached ordinary travelers, leading to tightened security measures on the island. According to AFP, Taiwan has recorded a significant increase in Chinese military activity in its surrounding airspace and waters.

Biggest military pressure since 2024

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it detected 89 Chinese military aircraft and 28 warships and coast guard ships operating near the island on Monday—the highest number since October 15, 2024.

Aviation officials warned that airspace restrictions imposed due to these military exercises would severely impact civilian flights on Tuesday. According to the Ministry of Transport:

Over 100,000 international passengers
Nearly 6,000 domestic passengers
will face significant delays, and many flights will be diverted to alternative routes to avoid restricted areas.

China Aims to Practice Blockade of Taiwan

Beijing confirmed that it has begun live-fire drills aimed at practicing a military blockade of Taiwan’s vital ports.

China also warned “external powers” supporting Taipei—a reference to the United States, which recently approved new arms sales to Taiwan.

A Chinese defense spokesperson accused Washington of escalating tensions:

“External powers are trying to use and arm Taiwan against China. This will fuel separatism and push the Taiwan Strait to the brink of war.”

Beijing once again stated that Taiwan is part of China and reiterated:

“Any plot to prevent China’s reunification will fail.”
