Chennai: Four people were killed and at least three others seriously injured in a multi-vehicle accident on the Thoppur Ghat Road in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district on Tuesday. Traffic was halted for nearly two hours due to the accident.
Lorry Loses Control on Ghat Road
According to police, a lorry carrying cattle feed from Maharashtra to Namakkal lost control while descending the Thoppur Ghat section. The lorry hit a two-wheeler, a parcel van, a car, and another van that were moving ahead or stuck in traffic.
Four Killed, Several Injured
The lorry driver, S. Muniappan (43), died on the spot. Two-wheeler riders, P. Arunagiri and his sister, V. Kalaiyarasi, also died on the spot. Four people in the van were seriously injured and taken to the Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital. Of these, P. Dinesh (30) succumbed to his injuries during treatment, bringing the death toll to four.
Traffic affected, investigation underway
Traffic on the Salem-Dharmapuri National Highway was completely disrupted following the accident. District Collector R. Sadheesh and senior officials from the Transport Department inspected the scene. Traffic was restored within about two hours after the damaged vehicles were removed. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
