Tamil Nadu school turns crime scene: Class 12 student killed after assault by juniors

Chennai: A clash between senior and junior students at a government higher secondary school in Tamil Nadu turned fatal, after a Class 12 student succumbed to severe head injuries following a violent assault.

Assault During School Dispute

Police said the student was attacked by a group of Class 11 boys at the Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School on December 4. During the altercation, the group allegedly struck him on the head with a wooden stick, causing a critical head injury.

Rushed for Treatment, Underwent Surgery

School authorities informed the boy’s parents, who immediately took him to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam. As his condition worsened, he was referred to a private hospital in Thanjavur, where surgeons performed an emergency operation to remove a blood clot from his brain.

Despite intensive care, he remained critical and passed away early Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m., police confirmed.

14 Juveniles Detained

Following the student’s death, police secured all 14 accused Class 11 students— all minors. They were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a juvenile home. The initial charge of attempted murder will now be altered to murder after post-mortem formalities, a senior officer stated.

Investigation and Public Outrage

Police are now probing what triggered the clash and whether previous tensions existed between the students. The level of supervision on the school premises at the time of the incident is also under scrutiny.

The incident has sparked anger among parents, teachers, and locals, who are demanding stricter safety protocols in schools. The Education Department is expected to launch a full inquiry alongside the criminal investigation.
