Taranjit Singh Sandhu to take oath as Delhi’s 23rd Lieutenant Governor

Veteran diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu is set to take oath as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on Wednesday, marking a significant leadership change in the administration of the national capital. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Lok Niwas (formerly Raj Niwas) in New Delhi and will be administered by the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

The ceremony is expected to begin at around 1:30 pm, with senior government officials, political leaders and bureaucrats likely to attend the event. After taking the oath, Sandhu will officially assume charge of the constitutional office responsible for overseeing the governance of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Leadership Transition in Delhi

Sandhu will succeed Vinai Kumar Saxena, who served as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor since May 2022. Saxena has now been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, leading to the administrative reshuffle that paved the way for Sandhu’s appointment.

The transition marks a fresh chapter in Delhi’s governance structure, as the Lieutenant Governor plays a crucial role in the administration of the union territory. The office works closely with the elected government, while also representing the interests of the central government in the capital.

Distinguished Diplomatic Career

Before entering constitutional office, Sandhu had a long and distinguished career in diplomacy. A 1988-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), he served in several key diplomatic postings throughout his career.

He is best known for his tenure as India’s Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024, during which he played an important role in strengthening India-US relations and coordinating high-level diplomatic engagements between the two countries.

Earlier, Sandhu also served multiple terms at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC, including as Deputy Chief of Mission and as a political officer responsible for liaising with the US Congress. His diplomatic experience spans several decades and includes postings at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations as well.

From Diplomacy to Public Life

After retiring from the diplomatic service, Sandhu briefly entered electoral politics and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amritsar, though he was unsuccessful. Despite that, his administrative experience and diplomatic background led to his selection for the top constitutional role in Delhi.

His appointment is seen by many analysts as an effort to bring seasoned international and administrative experience into the governance of the national capital.

Second Sikh Leader to Hold the Post

With this appointment, Sandhu will become the second Sikh leader to serve as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, after Arjan Singh, who held the position briefly in 1989.

Originally from Amritsar in Punjab, Sandhu comes from a family with a strong legacy in education and social reform. His background and administrative experience are expected to play an important role in handling the complex governance structure of the national capital.

As Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Sandhu will oversee key administrative functions, coordinate with the Delhi government, and ensure the smooth implementation of central policies in the national capital.
