Om Birla to Attend BNP Chief Tarique Rahman’s Swearing-In as Bangladesh PM in Dhaka

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister of Bangladesh in Dhaka today.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will also be present at the ceremony.

BNP-Led Alliance Secures Landslide Victory

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance registered a sweeping victory in the recent parliamentary elections, winning 212 seats.

In comparison, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance secured 77 seats.

Newly elected Members of Parliament will also take oath at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka this morning.

India Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Values

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that Mr Birla’s participation underscores the deep and enduring friendship between India and Bangladesh.

The ministry welcomed Bangladesh’s transition to an elected government under Mr Rahman’s leadership, reaffirming India’s steadfast commitment to the democratic values shared by the two nations.

International Participation at Oath Ceremony

Bangladesh’s interim government has invited heads of government from 13 countries to attend the ceremony, including representatives from India, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant political transition in Bangladesh following the decisive electoral mandate.
