Teacher Couple Killed in Accident While Heading for Zila Parishad Poll Duty

Moga: A tragic accident claimed the lives of a government teacher couple after their car plunged into an open drain in Punjab’s Moga district on Sunday morning. The incident occurred near Sangatpura village in the Baghapurana sub-division when Jaskaran Singh Bhullar (47) was driving his wife, Kamaljeet Kaur (46), to her zila parishad poll duty assignment. Locals rescued the couple from the vehicle and rushed them to a hospital, but doctors declared them dead.

Fog Suspected Cause, Say Police
According to Inspector Jatinder Singh, SHO of Baghapurana police station, Bhullar was heading towards Mari Mustafa village when the accident took place. Preliminary investigation suggests that dense fog may have caused the car to veer off the road and fall into the drain. Bhullar was posted as an English master at a government high school in Khote village, while Kamaljeet, a physical education teacher, was posted in Patto Hira Singh village but assigned poll duty in Baghapurana tehsil.

Safety Lapses and Poll Duty Concerns Raised
The couple is survived by two children. Colleagues alleged that the drain lacked proper safety railings or barricades, raising concerns over infrastructure negligence. The tragedy has intensified protests by teachers over poll duty deployment, particularly the assignment of far-off stations without transport or accommodation facilities. Nearly one lakh teachers are currently engaged in zila parishad and panchayat samiti poll duty across Punjab, leaving many government schools understaffed, while authorities have warned of action against those who fail to report for duty.
