Imphal: The situation remained tense for the second consecutive day on Sunday in Manipur’s Ukhrul district following Saturday’s deadly attack, which claimed the lives of two people, including a retired Indian Army soldier. The incident occurred on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) when unidentified armed assailants opened fire on several vehicles near Raudei (T.M. Kasom village).
According to police, more than 10 private and passenger vehicles were traveling from Imphal to Ukhrul when they were ambushed from a hilly area. Chinaoshang Shokhungnao (45) and Yaruingam Vashum (42) were killed in the attack, while three others were seriously injured, two of whom later succumbed to their injuries.
Security Operation Intensified, FIR Registered
Immediately after the incident, security forces launched a massive search operation in the area. An FIR has been registered against unidentified Kuki militants at the Litan police station. Additional security forces have been deployed to the scene, and a joint search operation is underway.
According to officials, conflict between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga groups has been ongoing in the Litan area of ββUkhrul since February, leading to frequent incidents of violence and road blockades.
Political and Organizational Reactions
The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) strongly condemned the massacre, calling it a “serious act” and alleging that it was allegedly carried out by Kuki militants operating under a State Agreement (SoO). The organization said such attacks could further escalate tensions in the region.
The NSCN-IM also alleged collusion between security forces and armed groups affiliated with the SoO agreement, although these claims have not been independently confirmed.
Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemendra Singh announced that the case would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He condemned the incident and announced compensation for the families of the victims.
The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) expressed deep outrage over the attack and blamed Kuki cadres. However, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) categorically rejected these allegations, stating that no Kuki-Zo group had any role in the incident and that it was likely related to factional conflict.
Tension remains in the area, and security forces are monitoring the situation.
